Kirkwall is the capital of Orkney and it’s main shopping and administration centre. Spend some time in the museum, browsing in the shops or sampling the local cuisine in one of the many excellent cafes and coffee shops. A tour of Kirkwall would not be complete without a visit to wonder at the magnificent St. Magnus cathedral, which dominates the town. Built by the Vikings to house the relics of St Magnus and started in 1137, it is a magnificent example of architecture using locally sourced red and yellow sandstone.
Please be aware that the weather in Orkney is extremely changeable, and that good walking shoes, warm and waterproof clothing, and a warm hat are recommended – even in Summer!
