Why Red’s Orkney Tours?
Select from one of the suggested tours, or tell me what you would like to see. I’m happy for you to contact me to discuss your exact requirements.
I have lived in Orkney since I was four, so I have a whole lifetime of local knowledge to share with you.
Fully Qualified Tour Guide
I am a fully qualified Scotttish Tourist Guide Association (STGA) green badge guide.
Wide Range of Services
I have a selection of tour suggestions listed, or you can choose your own. I have my own Mercedes minibus which can carry up to 8 passengers, or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous, I can accompany you on a bike tour (I can arrange hire) or walking or hiking.
I can pick you up from a location of your choice, hotel B&B, airport or ferry terminal. I have a brand new 9 seat Mercedes mini bus, which has all of the comforts that you would expect. I can take you anywhere that you want to go, or you could select one of my suggested tours. I would also be happy to speak to you to offer advice and suggestions that would suit you best and help you to make the most of your time in Orkney.
There are many places to go hiking, depending on your personal requirements and ability. Anything from a trip across the tidal causeway to the Broch of Birsay, with the chance of seeing some Puffins if you arrive at the right time of year (May to early August) to a full days hiking to the highest point on Orkney, Ward Hill on the island of Hoy. This would involve a short boat trip from Stromness to North Hoy and about 4 hours of tough hiking, but the view at the top is spectacular!
As a keen cyclist, I would be delighted to take you on a tour around Kirkwall, or any of the sites we have to offer. The type of tour would depend on your cycling experience, and how far you would like to go. You can start with an easy tour of Kirkwall and a view of Scapa Flow, right up to a full days cycling taking in all of the sites included in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage sites – plus coffee and cake!
Some of the islands are very accessible for a half or a full day trip, and each island is totally unique and offers something different.
Orkney is blessed with some of the best quality farm land and is surrounded by the bountiful sea, which means that this is a great place to come and sample the quality local food and drink we have on offer. Orkney is famous for beef and North Ronaldsay lamb, as well as sea food including lobster and scallops. There are a variety of different places to enjoy our local produce, from cafes to fine dining restaurants. Orkney also has a wide range of drinks available, with the two famous whisky distilleries of Highland Park and Scapa. There are also three gin distilleries, a wine producer and two local breweries. Tours can be arranged for a visit and a sample (or two!)
What Do Our Customers Say?
Great Private tour of Orkney vs Ship tour
David was dockside waiting for six of us who had connected on Cruise Critic prior to the cruise. He did an incredible custom tour that was longer than normal at our request and deposited us back at the ship right on time. We saw so many sites I can’t even remember them all…The Italian Church, Skara Brae, Stones if Stenness, Ring of Brodgar and David arranged tix for us to go inside Maeshowe, a Neolithic burial mound in use about 2700 BC. David gave us a tour of St Magnus cathedral and as ususl his knowledge of the church’s history (as well as everything else on the island) was on display, we saw the Bishop’s Palace, Skaill House and learned some of the island’s war history. Everyone seemed to know David and somehow he managed to keep us away from the cruise tour bus folks…we seemed to be leaving as they were arriving at sites. We were all impressed by Orkney…and especially pleased we had such a pleasant, knowledgeable guide in David to spend our 7+ hours with.
Really fabulous tour
Our 7-8 hour Orkney tour with David was a highlight of our trip to Scotland. David is a lovely guy who kept us all informed, engaged and entertained throughout the day. We’re a family of five (two adults, three teenagers) who are pretty well travelled, so we know what makes a good tour guide. With David, we saw all the important sights, never felt rushed, were inspired to ask loads of questions and came away with lots of lasting impressions we would never have gained had we tried to do this alone or in a big anonymous group. Highly recommended.
What a knowledgable guide! We feel like we saw as much as could be packed in to a day! David had a great deal of information and was willing to tailor the tour to our needs. I rate him among the best guides I have experienced. Highly, highly recommended!
